Press Release: In Memory of John Oosthuysen (1953–2024)


It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Oosthuysen, a cherished member of the South African Rugby League community, who passed away on 8 October 2024 at the age of 71. John was not only a dedicated supporter of Rugby League in South Africa but also a pillar of strength and leadership within the community.

John’s involvement with South African Rugby League spanned many decades, during which time he made significant contributions to the growth and development of the sport. His unwavering commitment and passion for Rugby League have left an indelible mark on the game, inspiring countless players, coaches, and fans across the country.

Throughout the years, John devoted his time, energy, and resources to ensure that Rugby League had a strong and enduring presence in South Africa. His guidance and mentorship helped shape the careers of many young athletes, and his legacy will continue to be felt for generations to come.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Oosthuysen family during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn the loss of a beloved father, husband, and community leader. John will be deeply missed by all who knew him, both on and off the field.

The funeral service will be held at Neoteros Gemeente, 5 duPlessis Street, Witbank, on 8 October 2024. Friends, family, and members of the rugby community are invited to attend and celebrate John’s life and the incredible impact he had on all of us.

In this time of sorrow, we remember John Oosthuysen for his dedication, his kindness, and the lasting legacy he has left behind. May he rest in peace.
