Early Years and Establishment
Growth and Challenges
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, rugby league faced numerous challenges, including
political and social upheaval in South Africa. Despite these obstacles, the sport continued to
grow, with dedicated players and administrators working tirelessly to promote and develop
the game.
International Participation
South Africa's national team, the Rhinos, has participated in various international
competitions, steadily improving their performance and gaining recognition on the global
stage. The establishment of the South African Rugby League Sporting Association
(SARLSA) further bolstered efforts to promote rugby league in South Africa and support the
national team’s ambitions.
Modern Era and Development
The post-apartheid era brought new opportunities for the South African Rugby League. In
the 1990s, SARL underwent significant restructuring to align with international standards and
foster inclusivity. This period also saw increased participation at the grassroots level, with a
focus on developing young talent and expanding the sport’s reach.
Future Aspirations
Today, rugby league in South Africa is poised for growth, with a clear vision for the future.
The SARLSA is committed to expanding the sport’s footprint, developing talent, and
achieving success at international competitions. With aspirations to qualify for the 2026
Rugby League World Cup and a long-term goal of making a mark in the 2030 World Cup,
the future of South African Rugby League looks promising.
